感想：文学の経験的研究のあり方を科学哲学の観点から整理した論文です。文学の経験的研究の初期の研究に多く見られたタイプの論文とも言えます。まず、著者は次のような言葉から論文を始めています。"Let it be clear from the start that I don't want an empirical psychology or an empirical sociology of literature to be my special subjects.  I don't question their justification in principle, but I think that an "empirical science" of literatuyre still has to solve practical problems of its own." (p. 351)

著者は、自然科学とはどのような学問であるのかということを整理することからはじめ、研究結果がpractical relevanceを持っていること、記述よりも説明が重要な要素となること、などを確認していました。

次に"science of literature"（文学の経験的研究）に伴う困難点について整理しています。まず、問題を記述する際に既に言語学的ないし記号論的にコード化されてたオブジェクトが入り込んでしまう点が指摘されていました。しかしながら、自然科学であったとしてもあらかじめpre-paradigmatic descriptive categorizationがなくても研究を行なうことが可能です（まして、science of literatureを行なえないなどということもありません）。
